ILLUSTRATED TALK BY Cormac Lowth
TITLE OF TALK: The Roman Wrecks of Lake Nemi
Cormac will give a talk on The Roman Wrecks of Lake Nemi, one of the greatest underwater archaeological discoveries and recoveries of all time. Cormac will be giving a fascinating account of the history of the excavation and conservation of two gigantic Roman ships from the time of the emperor Caligula, from the bottom of a small lake in the Alban Hills near Rome. The excavations took six years to complete.
The ships were recovered from the lake during the reign of the Fascist Government under Mussolini. It is a story of great endeavour and ultimately of great tragedy. Cormac will be showing a great many rare and interesting illustrations during the lecture.
