Hi ,
We are a small group concerned with the rescue of the sand dune system at Portrane beach. As many are aware, this dune has been recently obliterated by adverse weather & tides with over 10 metres being lost in places. In response to the urgency of the situation, we have been filling large sandbags as a temporary barrier to minimise wave power and in the hope that the dune can regenerate behind and around this barrier.
Four work days have already taken place with over 40 volunteers helping out and it would appear these efforts have been successful in arresting the rate of damage during recent high tides.

The next work session we have planned is for Saturday, May 18th 10am- 1pm (meeting at beach access, end of Healy’s lane). We are appealing for volunteers to join us for a few hours work on this vital remedial work. Tasks include: positioning and part filling sand bags, closing tops of bags, small repairs to boardwalk path, guiding JCB’s and temporary fencing (please bring along a shovel if possible).

In order to organise tasks and manage resources, if you are able to come along we ask that you drop us a quick email at: portraneduneprotection@gmail.com

**We would be very grateful if anybody could support us with the use of a JCB/ digger or have contacts where we may access one at minimal cost**

There will also be a Public meeting on Tuesday May 14th in ‘The Brook’ pub, Portrane at 8.30pm. These meeting have so far been well attended by local representatives including Brendan Ryan,T.D., Dr James Reilly, T.D., Clare Daly, T.D., Senator Darragh O’Brien and Councillors Gery McGuire and Darragh Butler.

On both dates there will be opportunity to make a small voluntary donation towards the cost of this campaign (so far work has been funded through small whiparound of volunteers present).

If you cannot attend on these dates but are interested in this issue, please email the above address and we would be delighted to keep you informed on events.

We thank you for your time and hope that you will join us in protecting one of our finest and environmentally important local amenities .
