Just saw on facebook Eugene is closing up shop. Certainly disappointing as we got all our meat there!

This is really really bad news - and so sorry to hear. His meat is wonderful and so much better than Supervalu.

disappointing news.
we need an Aldi or something big to compete with SV. its not a great shop and now gets more control in Donabate if you shop locally.
We use the new bakery twice a week, we should support our local shops where its good to do so.
hopefully, get something coming into the centre as Butchers replacement.

Supervalu are putting a newsagents in the old butcher's shop and expanding the off licence in their existing space.

We SERIOUSLY need some competition to Supervalu.

That new Supervalu space is shocking. They could have done much better. More prime space in the main st wasted. Almost as bad as the two bookies and the two pharmacies, not to mention the truly apalling state of the main st ģenerally (filthy, poorly kept etc).
in defense of the people/businesses that are actually doing something about empty spaces, if anyone feels they can do a better job then go ahead and take a lease out and offer something for sale.
you would surely also be complaining if that unit was left empty for months or years.
do you know what terms SuperValu have taken that unit on? Is it short term or long term? maybe they are only in for a while. either way it's better than being empty.
I agree that our choice of businesses on main street is very poor and when our population hits 20,000+ with nothing extra, it will be a cause for problems. if you think that the teenagers hanging around the shops now is a problem, just wait till all the extra residents come in. We need to realise that it's the county planners that have caused this problem. On top of the current problem, they are proposing 1200 homes in the middle of an area prone to flooding with no extra shops or businesses designed around them. I realise some people are happy just to have the extra homes because they don't want to see the bigger picture and feel they are entitled to a house just because, but we need sustainable planning and not just buildings dumped in a field with nothing. This is the real problem. Not supervalue
i do the bare minimum shopping in Donabate. Why? Because the choice is poor. I suspect most people with a car are the same as me. But I can't really complain about is as someone who is not prepared to open a shop myself

That's a good post Aoifey.
The simple reason the butchers closed is that not enough people bought their meat there.
It's not SuperValu's fault that most people prefer to shop there. We could always try an imposed socialist approach, but that's not working out too well in Venezuela.
Many people whined about the success of the local Ice Cream shop when there was too much on-street parking.
The real issue on the peninsula is the big housing dump that's about to happen. Focus on that.

Quite possibly the most patronising post I’ve ever seen on this forum.Vlad the Impaler wrote:That's a good post Aoifey.
